Sebastian Kwiatek, MD, PhD, is a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine with the Division of Medicine and Dentistry in Zabrze at the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice.
During his studies, he was scientifically associated with the Student Research Club at the Department and Clinical Division of Internal Medicine, Angiology, and Physical Medicine in Bytom, Medical University of Silesia. After graduating, he began working at this center as a junior assistant and then took up a residency in internal medicine.
In 2012, he defended his doctoral thesis with honors under the supervision of Prof. Aleksander Sieronia, MD, PhD, entitled: “Analysis of autofluorescence and fluorescence and optical biopsy of proliferative changes in the skin and esophagus” concerning the use of the physical bio-optical properties of tissues in the diagnosis of cancer. During his specialist training in internal medicine, he conducted scientific and teaching work with students of the Faculty of Medicine in Zabrze, the Faculty of Emergency Medicine, and the Faculty of Medical Physics at the University of Silesia.
He is the author of over 100 publications in Polish and foreign journals, as well as presentations at congresses and conferences in Poland and Europe covering issues of contemporary endoscopic imaging of precancerous and cancerous lesions of the gastrointestinal tract, with a total Impact Factor of 44.5. He was the assistant supervisor of one doctoral thesis. After obtaining the title of specialist in internal medicine, he undertook a specialization in angiology, which he completed in 2021. He obtained a Diploma of Competence from the Endoscopy Section of the Polish Society of Gastroenterology in the field of endoscopic examinations of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract. In 2019, he received the Honorary Trust Award “Golden Otis 2019” for his scientific achievements in physical medicine, mainly for co-creating a modern image analysis system that allows for the detection of precancerous and cancerous changes using polarized light.
In addition to endoscopic examinations of the gastrointestinal tract, Dr. Sebastian Kwiatek performs both transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, Doppler vascular examinations, thyroid ultrasound with fine-needle biopsy, and abdominal ultrasound. Currently, after completing training in Hamburg, he is introducing OverStitch endoscopic gastric plasty procedures in Silesia.
He is a member of the Polish Society of Internal Medicine, the European Photodynamic Medicine Platform, the European Society of Photobiology, and the Endoscopy Section of the Polish Society of Gastroenterology. His main non-medical interest is free diving, which has enabled him to conduct globally unique echocardiographic studies of scuba divers, revealing new cardiological aspects of free diving and their impact on the phenomenon of decompression sickness.
