Reconstructive surgery on the eyelids is performed due to partial or total loss of the eyelid. Such situations are the result of congenital defects, accidents, or tumor removal. This is a plastic surgery procedure.

The course of the procedure

The procedures are usually performed under local anesthesia and aim to restore the protective apparatus of the eye in the most functional and aesthetic form possible. The eyelid defect is reconstructed depending on its depth, extent, and location: with a free skin graft of similar color (e.g., from the upper eyelid, from behind the auricle), a skin flap, a skin-fat flap, or a skin-muscle flap. Most often, these are flaps from the immediate vicinity, moved using a specialized technique.

In larger tissue defects, it is necessary to use flaps from more distant areas, on vascular pedicles, or in the case of large tissue defects, free flaps composed using microsurgical techniques. Sometimes flaps from the upper eyelid are used on the lower eyelid with temporary suturing.

Postoperative course

A pressure dressing is applied after the procedure. After eyelid reconstruction procedures, hematoma, wound suppuration, and wound edge necrosis may occur.

Such situations occur due to infected cancerous ulcers, coagulation disorders caused by older patients taking anticoagulants, and failure to follow medical recommendations.

In the case of reconstruction after injuries and congenital defects, the percentage of complications is significantly lower. After the procedure, it is recommended to apply moist, cold boric acid compresses.

The stitches are removed after 7 to 10 days. A normal appearance is achieved after about 14 days, and complete healing takes about a month. The final effect of the procedure should be assessed after this time.
