Subcutaneous mastectomy with implant is a procedure of breast removal with simultaneous reconstruction. The surgery is performed on both cancer patients and healthy women as part of breast cancer prevention. The removal of the mammary gland can be combined with the insertion of a breast implant. When is a preventive mastectomy performed?

Breast cancer is a serious oncological disease that is strongly correlated with mutations in the BRCA1 and BRC2 genes. It is estimated that approximately 100,000 Polish women in Poland carry the mutated gene. The risk of developing breast cancer in this case ranges from 56-80%. Due to this high probability of developing the disease, preventive breast removal – mastectomy – is recommended.

However, breast removal is a painful blow to a woman, as breasts are a symbol of femininity. However, mastectomy does not have to spell disaster. Consultation and qualification for the procedure

Qualification for the procedure includes a consultation with the attending physician, during which a detailed interview is conducted with the patient and the indications for the procedure are assessed. At this stage, the appropriate treatment method is selected, and possible risks of complications and post-procedure effects are discussed, taking into account the patient’s individual needs. During the consultation, the procedure date is also set, and the patient receives pre-procedural recommendations and a list of necessary tests to be performed before the procedure.

Preparation for the procedure

  • 2 weeks before the procedure: Avoid dental procedures, medications that lower blood clotting (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, dietary supplements), and products such as garlic, ginger, and fish. Avoid smoking (including e-cigarettes) 4 weeks before the procedure, and alcohol and caffeine for 5 days. Avoid procedures that affect the skin (tattoos, piercings, aesthetic medicine), and sunbathing.
  • Diet: It’s recommended to follow a light, protein-rich, low-fat diet.
  • Medications: Take your medications regularly, but consult your doctor about the use of blood clotting medications.
  • Tests: Perform the recommended laboratory tests 7-10 days before the procedure and send the results to the clinic. Provide a certificate from your dentist.
  • Personal preparation: Wash your body with antibacterial soap and wash your hair. On the day of your procedure, please arrive without makeup, jewelry, or contact lenses, and without any creams or lotions. Bring pajamas, a tracksuit, slippers, and toiletries.
  • Chronic Illnesses: Patients with heart disease and high blood pressure should take their medications as directed by their doctor.
  • Discontinuation of GLP-1 Analogs: Discontinue all GLP-1 analogs (e.g., Ozempic) at least three weeks before your procedure to avoid the risk of complications.
  • After the procedure: Arrange transportation home; do not drive for 48 hours after the procedure under general anesthesia.
  • Health Changes: If you experience a fever, runny nose, cough, or other health changes, please contact the registration desk before your procedure.

Before the wound is sutured, drains are left in place at the site of the removed breast. The drains are removed a few days after the surgery, when the discharge stops. Post-operative recommendations after mastectomy

For several weeks after the procedure, the patient must wear a specially fitted compression garment both day and night. Physical activity can be resumed after six weeks at the earliest. Swimming, saunas, and hot tubs are not recommended. Sleeping with the head elevated and placing pillows under the shoulders is recommended.
